The most northern of the
capital cities of
Valencia is settled on
its present location from the XIII c. The old Castelló, Arabian origin, was over
the hill of La Magdalena, about 32 miles far. It was James I from
Aragon who, after
defeating the moors, let the population to move. To this relatively recent
foundation we owe a small and tidy city centre.
The city centre is around
the Plaza Mayor. Here in the most ancient place of the city, stand out the Town
Hall, the Cathedral and the Tower of
El
Fadrí, (the single man in
Arabic). The Town Hall, a construction from the XVIII c. Tuscan style, is
housing paintings of Doménech and
sculptures of Benlliure. El Fadrí, 170 f. high and beautiful glazed blue ceramic
tiles roof, is the symbol of the city and attracts our attention its
construction separate from the cathedral of Saint Mary. The gothic origin of
this temple is appreciable in its lateral façades, although the rest of the
construction is modern.
Inside, work of
Valencia goldsmithery
from the XVIII c. are remarkable.
Social and cultural life
of the inhabitants is around this area. The Principal Theatre, neoclassic and
modernist style, and the Old
Casino, a gardened Mansion, arrange the cultural offer of the town. The Peace
Sq. besides the Theatre, counts with singular buildings like the Sord House, Balaguer House or
Dávalos house. Our tour cancontinuo in the
Fine
Arts
Museum or in the
Ethnologic, Municipal or Provincial
ones.
